The Quran is considered holy in its original form because it is Gods word exactly as it was revealed. It is a big deal in Islam that the Quran (Word of God)is authentic. One statement in the Quran actually says that this will be the only book of God's word that will be protected until judgement day. It is even a challenge that, if it were changed from its perfection in any way, it would be proven as a false doctrine. There are commandments in the Quran against adding to it or changing it in any way. A translation is never considered the authentic Word of God. We usually refer to them as an Explanation of the meaning of the Holy Quran. Most people don't say that it has to be hand written, though. I've been to the publishing factory in Saudi where Qurans are authenticated and printed, it is quite a process.

Aside from that there are of course libraries full of explanations and comments on the meaning of the Quran. As well as, Hadith, on the life and sayings of the profit and his companians. Extreme measures have been taken to authenticate Hadith as well. If Hadith isn't verifiable through reliable triangulated studies that go to the source then the Hadith isn't considered authentic. By the way, the sayings of the profit are nothing like the language of the Quran. The Hadith on his life, like other messengers before him, is considered the example of the life we should live to be in accordance with the Quran.
