<<I agree that Aranea easily beats the Juniper, but it seems comparable to the Avici and less impressive than the Pluris, >>

Well, the Pluris specs look impressive indeed - and the architecture too.

But if you look closely at the charts in that Pluris WhitePaper #4, where 9 other competitors are listed (Aranea would make 10), and slot in the appropriate Aranea (min, max or shelf) configuration, Aranea comes in consistently second or third or fourth - better than LU and CSCO's entries, which consistently slot seventh to ninth. Juniper slots in about 10th place.

Very impressive. You don't have to have THE BEST offering to sell your offering - especially if the leader (spec wise) is not a big networking player.

Now consider the architectures - they seem similar in that they have both thought through issues of expandability, redundancy and management, whereas some of the others have not.

Cost is not known - and could be a very significant factor.

Aranea appears to have Pluris beat in a few areas.

Pluris does not mention Gigabit Ethernet at all, whereas with Aranea it is mix and match - this is a MAJOR advantage.

Pluris boxes can be up to 1000 feet apart whereas Aranea is connected via DWDM, allowing more distance - another significant advantage.

Aranea-2 aggregates the flow up to OC-768 (40 Gigabits/s) and Pluris does not mention that at all.

And where is the rest of the Pluris family of networking products? Aranea can be expected to be compatible with NBase-Xyplex products, and, when selling to an account, having a broad product line is very important.

And considering that Argon just got bought for something like $240 million or so, and MRV is getting a majority stake for just a few million dollars, this appears to be a great value.

Disclaimer - Aranea specs are vague - especially in calculating a max configuration, so I could be off a bit (but not enough to change the overall evaluation)

What do others think?
