The Sandinistas established a dictatorship inimical to US interests. The Carter Administration started by giving them aid, but they became progressively repressive and anti- American anyway, so even before Reagan the Carter people had become antagonistic. The situation fits perfectly with my observations, and when elections ensued, Violetta Chamorro won...Similarly, we worked with the Ba'athist regime in Iraq until it became clear that it threatened US strategic interests, and now we are trying to overthrow it...Unsuccessfully, I might add...

rrman,

You are so WRONG claiming that the Sandinistas were popularly elected. You obviously haven't bothered to speak to many of them who lived through the regime.

The revolution against Somoza was carried out predominantly by the middle class business men and others who were completely fed up with his corruption.

The Sandinistas were a relatively small group of guerillas who suddenly were catapulted to the forefront of this political upwelling.

Once there, they commenced to create, under Tomas Borge', an incredibly repressive society where neighbors informed upon neighbors and distrust and fear ran rampant.

The middle class had their property confiscated and they fled for the US and other locations.

Hardly what can be called a "govt of choice" from the perspective of those who empowered them to those initial days of the overthrow of Somoza.

Regards,

Ron

>> The specific reason was to inhibit the government of choice, the Sandanistas, <<

Did anyone ask the Mesquites (sp?) about that?

Raising up the Sandinistas as poster boys for "good government" isn't such a great idea.

FWIW
