It is shame that the colonial powers were so irresponsible. But then again, the very nature of imperialist expansion was barely legalized looting. And the people that were left behind, such as in S. Africa, were hardly prepared or inclined to form a representative government along the lines of the homeland. In places like Angola or the Congo, which were developed only so far as their resources could be stripped, the withdrawal of the colonial powers left a country which not only had no experience with self-government, or any government other than government by decree for that matter, but had no infrastructure upon which to build a sustainable economy. It was a tragic loss of opportunity, even in comparatively half-developed countries like India. But the clamor for independence was loud, and I suppose Britain, for one, was tired of the "White Man's Burden."
