<<Is it really reasonable to demand that the Government of Nicaragua be responsive to American interests? What happens when a government decides that the interests of their own people do not coincide with those of the US? Do we have the right to overthrow them?>>

I've abstained from commenting on this discussion because I am torn on this issue myself, and I think you and Neo have both offered good points. However, on the above comment, I have to say that we would have to remember the context in which these events happened.

Remember that the Cold War was still in full swing, and there was a global ideological war which was very real for both parties. You must admit, that a Marxist dictatorship popping up in our backyard at a time when the ComIntern was still advocating global violent revolution, was enough to get our panties in a bundle. I think the situation would be far different today, under different political circumstances. At the time, every half-baked Marxist organization, whether sponsored by Moscow or not, raised the spectre of Soviet nukes within spitting distance of the Rio Grande.

By all accounts? The Chamorros, who opposed Somoza, didn't see much difference...They were forced to hold an election by our support of the Contras...They don't have to be coincident with our interests, but we could not afford to have the Soviet bloc establish a beachhead in Central America...
