Biometric Identification and Gemplus to deliver state-of-the-art security
solution
Biometric Security Corp BMS
Shares issued 20,834,412 May 26 close $0.24
Thu 27 May 99 News Release
Mr. Patrick McCleery reports
Biometric Security has an agreement to acquire 45 per cent of the private,
California-based company, Biometric Identification Inc. (Biometric ID), and
currently has made payments totalling $3.5-million (U.S.) for debentures
convertible into 36.25 per cent of the company. Biometric ID produces
advanced, comprehensive, user-friendly and cost-effective fingerprint-based
biometric hardware and software solutions.)
Biometric Identification, a leading provider of fingerprint identification
systems, and Gemplus SCA (Gemplus), the world's largest smart card
provider, have announced the industry's first contactless smart card
fingerprint authentication system. This one-of-a-kind biometric solution is
ideal for use in access control, mass transit and information security
applications.
Named BioSmart, this fully featured, stand-alone biometric smart card
access control solution provides secure user authentication by employing
fingerprint verification in conjunction with the convenience and efficiency
of being contactless. By storing the biometric template on the smart card,
the BioSmart provides a portable personal identification system, ideal for
applications where cardholders travel between multiple secure facilities
within one location or around the world. Storing the biometric template on
the smart card also helps to reduce administrative costs associated with
managing large biometric template databases. The BioSmart is available now
in limited quantities for testing and evaluation, and is expected to ship
worldwide in August 1999.
"Working closely with an industry leader like Gemplus facilitates the
integration of two best-of-breed technologies for practical and reliable
secure access solutions, and is an important step towards the eventual
merging of physical and logical access systems," said Bob Kamm, chief
executive officer of Biometric ID. "We have immense respect for Gemplus and
the innovative nature of their product strategy."
"Gemplus goal is to offer customers the most comprehensive and secure smart
card-based solutions available on the market today," said Michel Leduc,
marketing director of Integrated Solutions for Gemplus. "Combining Gemplus
contactless smart cards with Biometric ID's fingerprint authentication
technology allows us to jointly offer the unique and flexible security
solutions that our customers demand. We look forward to developing this and
potentially other security system products with Biometric ID."
The BioSmart is based on Gemplus' industry-leading contactless smart card
technology. These innovative cards look just like plastic credit cards,
except they have an electronic microchip and an antenna embedded inside.
These components allow the card to communicate with an antenna/coupler unit
without a physical contact. Contactless cards are the ideal solution when
transactions must be processed very quickly, as in mass-transit or
toll-collection activities.
In addition to the functionality offered by the Gemplus contactless smart
card system, the BioSmart uses the advanced technology of Biometric ID's
MV1100 self-contained fingerprint verification module. The MV1100 is an
embedded biometric solution, smaller than a business card, which verifies
an individual's identity in less than one second. The device is designed
for applications where a host computer is not available or not considered
secure. The MV1100 stores thousands of fingerprint templates, performs
enrolment and verification using the industry's leading fingerprint
verification algorithm, Ridge Recognition, and provides multiple
communication options.
Biometrics is the automated identification of an individual based on its
unique physiological features. In a large percentage of the world
marketplace, biometrics is manifesting itself in fingerprint verification
and authorization technologies for office and home security, building
access control, time and attendance systems, smart card and point of sale
terminals, electronic commerce systems, computer networks and mobile
communication devices.
