But, bluntly and simplistically, if all that you predict had happened, it would be their problem and not ours.

Carl Sagan once likened the nuclear arms race to two people standing knee-deep in gasoline and one of them has 1,000 matches and the other has 1,500.

Your thesis seems to be that we were right to attempt to knock the matches out of the Serb's hands because of the potential effect that they could have on their neighbors and their neighbor's matches.

I just think we'd be much better off getting our asses out of the gasoline.

That infers that no negotiated settlement was possible - the Accord was heavily weighted towards the KLA's position - another agreement might have been possible - maybe not - in this situation the propaganda is so thick one knows very little of the realities. We may have to wait sometime for insiders to come forward with their memoirs. If the Tories (with or without Haig) play their cards right they may, stunningly, win the next election, now that Blair faces a defection of 80 MPs on the social legislation issue - which I think is a symptom of a deeper disaffection with many Blair initiatives, and especially this Kosovo business which must sit very uneasily on the conscience of many labourites. In the eyes of many, Blair has got far too big for his boots, and has been embarassing the US with his pronouncements. d
