Michael,

Is it the WSJ (Lee Gomes) gone Hollywood or Oracle? Both in my opinion. Reading the comments and quotes in the article shows little difference. What do you think is inaccurate in the article? I'd like to understand better which points you think should be discounted.

Having lived through several Oracle "whale hunts" (e.g. Informix, SAP, and the still ongoing Microsoft one), I was amused by the "LJE as Captain Ahab" analogy. Don't get me wrong, there is no question that Larry is a huge driving force behind Oracle's success (check my previous posts on Oracle if you want to get my perspective).

The reason the analogy struck a chord with me is that I personally do think that LJE/Oracle does go over the top in it's PUBLIC pronouncements of it's current "enemy". This is a great mechanism for focusing the organization, getting them all fired up and ready to go out and do battle. But, the public side of this touches on the realm of embarrassing. I think that all the bravodo/bluster/ego that makes it out into articles, ads, conference presentations actually does a disservice to Oracle. I think a subtler public effort -coupled with the same good intense INTERNAL focus- would be the better approach. But that's just my opinion.

Anyway, the analogy comes close enough that it does make me wonder. Luckily LJE has managed to get himself off of one whale hunt and onto another before getting taken down through a total unyielding pursuit of the less viable pursuits.

Just my opinion. The opening line of that article still makes me laugh.

Cheers,

Jesse
