Brian, I trust when I see things making sense. When I see things NOT making sense, then trust goes out the window and answers are needed. AirTouch claim to be able to sell the minutes at $1.50 or maybe $2. So, given the vast profit that will give them, why haven't they ordered 1 million handsets for delivery in September? 1 million handsets x 600 minutes per month [they claim they have high use customers] x 12 months per year x $1 per minute profit with negligible costs = $6bn per year profit for them. Oh, they don't want that? Well, I guess that's why they wouldn't order handsets then. I've seen the argument that Service Providers don't care about opportunity cost. Maybe this is mounting evidence that that is true. They need a poke in the bum! Which means competition. Slash the minute prices and let's see which Service Provider has the get up and go to actually make some money and order a dirty great heap of handsets. If they don't get moving, they'll miss out. The Service Provider shareholders will ask their management how come they were sound asleep when an opportunity sailed right under their noses. Maybe Vodafone/AirTouch is going to turn into an also-ran. But maybe I'm prejudging and the press release from Qualcomm tomorrow will report a million handset order from AirTouch. Don't hold your breath. Incidentally, speaking of out the window, I'm reliably informed that Globalstar handsets will NOT work from the inside of buildings in Globalstar mode. There would need to be a view of half the sky, to have reasonably reliable connection, which would mean having the aerial right up by the window while bending low down to get angle up to the sky. Or having a detachable aerial. Maurice
