1.) "not a scholar"--- yep...
2.) "don't think the contras were even a legit party"--- they weren't a party at all, but a fighting force composed of various opponents to the regime, from Somozistas to those who participated in the original coalition that overthrew Somoza. They were poorly coordinated, but their ranks swelled with peasants disaffected with the regime. We supported them, but they weren't "coked up"...

As bad as Somoza was, the Sandinistas were no better. This has been proven to my satisfaction, anyway. I'll never forget the photo in SOF of the Nicuraguan rebels.... they were firing from a machinegun pit adorned with all kinds of crucifixes and the like....the caption stated that many of the rebel positions were decorated this way... it says alot about the fighters, and about the Sandinistats they were fighting to overthrow...

The sandinistats may have been popular for a fortnight or so, but their true intentions and methods soon became apparent to the general populace...
