Friday May 21, 12:26 pm Eastern Time (Note: this article is ''in progress''; there will likely be an update soon.) WinStar CEO sees more deals like Lucent pact By Ian Simpson NEW YORK, May 21 (Reuters) - WinStar Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:WCII - news) is working on more alliances like the expanded pact it announced Friday with Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news), Winstar Chief Executive William Rouhana Jr. said. In an interview, he also said he was comfortable with a First Call consensus estimate of a second-quarter loss of $3.82 a share for the telecommunications company. ''We're very comfortable with the current projections that are out there,'' Rouhana said. ''We're happy to be adding new things like (the Lucent deal) to the top of the plan.'' Winstar and Lucent, the telecommunications equipment company, said they had entered a marketing pact that extended an existing agreement to build Lucent's fixed wireless broadband telecom network. The marketing agreement could deliver $100 million of extra business to WinStar over five years, the company said. In October 1998, Lucent landed a five-year, $2 billion contract to build WinStar's fixed wireless broadband network. Rouhana said WinStar was discussing similar alliances with other companies. Announcements could come in the near future. However, the deals likely would be on a smaller scale than the Lucent pact, ranging in size from $10 million to $30 million. ''I expect to do more of this kind of thing,'' Rouhana said. He added, ''This is a continuing evolution of what is a very good relationship between the two companies.'' He said WinStar's focus was on increasing the use of its existing network, especially for large business customers who use more services. The Lucent agreement meant ''more revenue for use on our network, and that ... generates nice high margin for us,'' he said. WinStar will team with Lucent to provide business customers with telecommunications services -- including voice, data and Internet -- using Lucent's equipment and software, over WinStar's digital broadband network. Lucent and WinStar will develop and market new products and services, incorporating WinStar's wireless fiber network with Lucent's communications, data networking and business telephone systems. On the Nasdaq, WinStar shares were up 1 to 49-7/8 at midday Friday in light trade. On the New York Stock Exchange, Lucent's stock eased 1-3/16 to 57-5/8.
