An interesting remark that ignores the Media Matrix numbers:

Internet gateways Excite Inc. (Nasdaq:XCIT - news), Go2Net Inc. (Nasdaq:GNET - news) and Lycos Inc. (Nasdaq:LCOS - news) were among the top losers on the Nasdaq exchange.

One analyst said that as portals multiply, they are each getting a smaller share of visitors as they divide an audience that is not growing in size. Portals rely on visitor numbers to attract advertisers to their sites.

Media Matrix is the recognized source on the subject and this unnamed analyst was apparently ill informed, malintentioned or both. Still, bad press like this hurts stock valuations and is the market equivalent of yelling, "Fire!" in a crowded movie theatre. People get hurt in the stampede to the exits. JMO, but true nonetheless.
