Of course if the B of E were to step into the market and buy and drive the price up by the date of the July auction that would, I guess, qualify as (extremely?) manipulative trading. I've read that the daily trading of gold on the London market is huge - I think these announcements (of auctions) feed more into the emotion, and fear, of the market, and the perception of CB's intentions. In the late 70's IMF and Treasury auctions were heavily oversubscribed and the gold market soared - like gasolene on a flame - it will be interesting to see how the BofE ones fare. d
