More: 3Com To Make Wireless Version Of Palmpilot
Reuters - 02:31 a.m. May 21, 1999 Eastern

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - 3Com Corp.'s Palm Computing division will
announce the availability of the wireless version of its popular Palm Pilot
handheld computer Monday, for sending e-mail and accessing the Internet.

The company is hosting a customer event at the Rainbow Room
in New York's Rockefeller Center Monday to announce the availability
of the Palm VII, which is expected to be priced at about $599.
It will initially be available in the New York metropolitan area,
according to a source close to the company.

3Com officials, in Santa Clara, Calif., could not be immediately reached for
comment. The product was first unveiled in December with about 22
companies who said they would provide content for the new device, ranging
from ABC News to E+Trade.

''It can get stock quotes, read news, send text wirelessly and even locate the
nearest ATM machine,'' said Michael Cristinziano, an analyst with Gerard
Klauer Mattison & Co., adding that the Palm Pilot is one of the fastest
growing segments of 3Com.

The Palm Pilot, which 3Com purchased through its acquisition
of US Robotics, makes up about 10 percent of 3Com's total sales.
While the Palm Pilot is currently the most widely used handheld
computer, its dominance will soon be under attack by a barrage
of so-called ''Web phones,'' wireless phones which will also
access the Internet.

The new Palm VII uses software called Web clipping, which extracts
certain amounts of data from a Web site that fits it into the
simplified form on the small Palm screen. Additional partners
will also be announced Monday.
