Informix Provides Exclusive Database Power for InteliHealth Consumer Web Site
Webby Award-Winning Site Uses Informix To Efficiently Deliver More Than Seven Million Page-Views Per Month
MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999-- Informix® Corporation (NASDAQ:IFMX - news), the technology leader in enterprise database-powered solutions, today announced that InteliHealth® (www.intelihealth.com), a joint venture between Aetna U.S. Healthcare® and Johns Hopkins University and Health System, relies on Informix Dynamic Server(TM) to power its Webby award-winning InteliHealth consumer Web site.
The Informix system enables industry-leading InteliHealth to strategically maximize the effectiveness and speed of its information-rich, visually appealing site through dynamic Web page creation, automatic import of content, and highly flexible content organization and output options.
The InteliHealth consumer Web site, considered the premier one-stop location for credible, authoritative health information, serves up more than seven million Informix-based page-views per month. ''As a pioneer in disseminating health-related information over the Internet to consumers, we understand the critical importance of time to market,'' said Richard Genzer, chief technology officer at InteliHealth. ''By selecting Informix as our strategic technology partner, we've been able to meet our customers' up-to-the-minute needs for information and products which, in turn, has enabled us to lead the industry in a rapidly evolving, highly competitive business.''
Through InteliHealth, consumers have instant access to resources from more than 150 leading sources, as well as condition-specific health zones, discussion groups and easy access to a wide range of health information on virtually every aspect of health and well-being. The InteliHealth consumer Web site features more than two million pages of breaking health news, medical literature, journals and research.
Informix also provides the foundation for InteliHealth's e-commerce strategy; an Informix-based online store offers InteliHealth visitors hundreds of top-quality health care products designed to promote healthy living, improve diet and fitness, alleviate stress, reduce back pain and relieve allergies.
''InteliHealth is clearly a leader in its field, and we are thrilled to play such an instrumental role in the success of its Web site,'' said Wes Raffel, vice president of Informix's i.Informix division. ''Many Web publishers, including InteliHealth, are recognizing the tremendous savings that can be realized by using Informix Dynamic Server to manage their Web-based information and the interaction with Web viewers. We look forward to providing InteliHealth with the support and technology they require as they continue to expand their business model to meet the evolving needs of consumers.''
Informix Provides Foundation for Mature, Dynamic Web Site
The Informix system enables InteliHealth's editors to easily create and maintain complex information. Currently, the Informix system generates approximately one million condition-specific e-mails per week, based on consumer preferences.
Typically, editors update news content on InteliHealth's site three times per day. Because all Informix content is rendered through templates, editors can display similar topics and content using a range of different layouts, with particular sponsors' messages and products positioned based on a layout's content. This eliminates the need for editors to learn HTML.
''Informix allows our editors to focus their talents on publishing and editing content, rather than on understanding database technology,'' said Genzer. ''As a result, InteliHealth has been able to quickly expand from its original Web information business to providing content to more than 100 newspapers, establishing distribution relationships with AOL, Alta Vista, CBS.com and others, and providing prominent positions on our site to dozens of sponsors. In addition, we're able to meet the needs of the ever-increasing number of advertisers who want access to our highly qualified Internet traffic.''
The InteliHealth Informix database runs on a Sun Enterprise 4000 server. To enable maximum flexibility and scalability, InteliHealth developers designed the database to accommodate an unlimited amount of multimedia content, as well as to allow for information rendering in a variety of formats, including the Web, e-mail and print. In addition, each page posted by InteliHealth contains from 150 to 400 logical database interactions, making it fast and easy for consumers to find the information or resources they need.
InteliHealth uses Informix Dynamic Server with two options that extend the functionality of the powerful database server to encompass rich media: Informix Universal Data Option(TM) and the Web DataBlade® module.
About Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option
Informix Dynamic Server speeds query and administration tasks, maintains optimal performance regardless of computing environment, and enables the development of database applications that take full advantage of all available hardware resources. With flexible configuration options, Informix Dynamic Server supports all data types, provides maximum performance and scalability for decision support, supports data warehouse applications running in high-end parallel environments and allows the creation of intelligent Web applications.
The Universal Data Option uses DataBlade technology to extend the traditional relational database functionality of Informix Dynamic Server to incorporate new data types such as photos and maps, and new industry-specific business logic such as package routing rules or complex currency exposure analysis. This option also allows customers to take advantage of new server functions and indexing methods for Web and content management.
