Dial Access Market Reaches All Time High According to
Leading Market Research Firm, Cahners In-Stat Group

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1999--Cahners In-Stat Group's Q1
99 Dial Access Market Analysis report reveals that the market reached an all time high
in Q1 99.

Overall, the market experienced over 20 percent revenue and port growth compared to
single digit growth in Q4 98.

According to Cahners In-Stat Group, both Access Servers and Access Concentrators
experienced strong sequential growth. Access Servers saw renewed demand due to
increasing functionality being offered on these low-end devices, specifically Virtual
Private Network (VPN) capability.

Access Concentrators continue to be the gem of the Dial Access market, outpacing
expectations. Access Concentrator ports and revenues increased by 28 percent in Q1
99.

"Q1 99 was a stellar quarter for the Dial Access Market, especially Access
Concentrators," said Shannon Pleasant, senior analyst with Cahners In-Stat Group.
"Service Providers continue to be the most lucrative opportunity for these high-end
devices. Revenues for this segment increased by over 40 percent sequentially in Q1."

Q1 is traditionally a strong quarter for Access Concentrators, which in combination
with stable Average Selling Prices (ASPs) and growing momentum behind
infrastructure build out, contributed to this exceptional growth.

Cahners In-Stat Group also found:
--   In the Access Concentrator market, Ascend and Cisco continued to
pull away in the three-way market share race with 3Com. Ascend
led the Access Concentrator market with 31 percent sales market
share; Cisco and 3Com ended the quarter with 30 percent and 24
percent sales share respectively.

-- Cisco remained the leader of the Access Server market with over
50 percent sales share, followed by Shiva and Nortel Networks
with 14 percent and 10 percent sales market share, respectively.
