The 401k player is indicative of nothing. His index fund returns, however, are indicative of the return that can be easily made in the market. Publicly available mutual fund data (which encompasses 100% of his alternative managed investing options) shows that in a vast majority of cases that's an far better deal. I wonder why you are taking so long to understand this; is it because you used to be a fund manager in the past? Relax, I am not going to tell your partners how index investing is a good deal.

There are several ways people get wealthy, including your namesake who used to deal in junk bonds, while some greenmail Texaco. But we are talking investments here.
