I believe we've been witnessing the "de-monetarization" of gold.

When this happened to Silver, it took a century for Silver to regain any value.

Expecting Gold to resume its former role as a monetary standard is unrealistic.

Expecting it to be a hedge against inflation during the demonetarization process is foolhardy.
