And yes, if they "spun it out" or issued a tracking stock, that "intel.com" could be another CMGI (in which Intel is also invested !).

The only problem with this is that Intel isn't investing in these companies for capital gains. Those are quite incidental. They invest in these companies (directly, through placements/warrant exercises so that the company gets the money) in order to encourage technology that will increase the demand for faster processors. Think of it as indirect R&D.

If you wanted to spin off these investments as an investment company then you'd have to change goals and it would no longer serve Intel.
