Friday's WSJ had an article about the the Linux threat to Microsoft dominance in server OS. Linux share of unit sales of operating systems was 17% last year, and it is showing the fastest growth rate in the industry. Windows NT market share is flat. Linux is not only more stable than NT, it's faster on small entry level computers. MSFT has finally awakened from it's slumber and is taking the threat very seriously.
This is more evidence that MSFT should be taking thin client- CTXS seriously also, because this solution requires Windows NT on the server. Alternative approach are 1)for MSFT to try to include all of CTXS features on their own future offering (windows 2000) without involving CTXS 2) spend the money and time improving the stability and versatility of the underlying Windows server software so that Linux would be less attractive, and leave the thin client part to CTXS.
I suspect that part of the popularity of Linux stems from the fact that it isn't from MSFT. The "Evil Empire" image has been reinforced by the trial. In the server OS battle, the David and Goliath image rules.
