I have never shorted a stock. I don't believe in it in the long haul because I've seen too many traders hurt. I do buy a fair amount of puts however, and that limits your loss. I can usually get 1 or 2 points on an intraday trade or 'next day gapper trade' with puts on average.

They are my 'diversionary' trades while I'm waiting for my stocks to trigger buy signals. If I have to I can spend day after day just trading puts, I don't really mind. I've made a killing on puts twice. Once with Dell (I had to be prodded and cajoled.. thanks Pierre!!) and the second time in late August and early September.

But now since the stocks I trade are so highly volatile, holding puts for any length of time is impractical, so I don't make much but I keep my losses very small. Shorting stocks I guess you can make a fortune. I like to go long, I'm better at it and that's because of my bullish view on the market.
