The law IS society's attempt to define what justice is. Imperfect, yes. Flawed, yes. But MUCH better than letting each person decide for themselves what they believe is just and go out with weapons and follow their own desires. It's why we have laws in the first place.

Nobody ever acted in a way they could not in their own mind justify in some way. Everybody who takes up arms believes in their own mind that they are justified in doing so.

The law is simply society as a whole's decision as to which acts are justified and which aren't.

Not perfect. But, as has been said of democracy, it's the worst system going except for all the rest.
