NRM <NRMI.O> to use Microsoft digital music format
PITTSBURGH, May 21 (Reuters) - Music retailer National
Record Mart Inc. on Friday said it would adopt Microsoft
Corp.'s <MSFT.O> digital format for downloading music for its
Internet sales service.
The retailer said music sold to consumers through the Web
would be serviced by privately held Amplified.com, an Internet
music wholesaler which provides download and custom compilation
services to music retailers and record labels.
Material purchased by consumers can be played on the
Microsoft Windows Media Player.
National Record Mart says songs that are purchased and
downloaded would be encoded to prevent unauthorized use, and
payments to various copyright holders would be assured through
Amplified.com and its partnership with Reciprocal Inc.
The retailer said the service would be available in the
third quarter of 1999 on Web sites www.nrmmusic.com and
www.wavesmusic.com.
National Record Mart launched the two sites in December.
On May 12, music industry giant Sony Corp.'s <6758.T> Sony
Music Entertainment said it would begin selling selected
popular songs over the Internet this summer, using a digital
format developed by software behemoth Microsoft Corp.
The non-exclusive relationship with the No. 2 music
distributor was a boost for Microsoft, which has been fighting
for industry support of its format against rivals led by
RealNetworks Inc. <RNWK.O>.
