Re why Japan is a particularly fertile field for CDMA:

In many countries, GSM is the established wireless system and CDMA has to fight for a place at the table. Yet in Japan, PHS which was supposed to be the Japanese way, has been the established king. Now that it is clear the PHS can't cut it, CDMA emerges as the challenger. GSM is not a major established factor - not a dog in the manger as it is elsewhere. Very different from China, no? Chaz
