Corporate History
Tellium is dedicated to providing next-generation optical networking solutions for large public network operators. The company designs, develops, manufactures and markets optical networking systems that allow customers to build survivable Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks. By converting years of experience and research in the optical networking field into a series of practical, interoperable products based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), Tellium enables service providers to handle the explosion of data traffic on their existing fiber optic networks. Providers can combine their current assets with products that deliver SONET-like features at an unprecedented level of configurability and survivability at the optical layer.

Founded in May 1997, Tellium is the commercial spin-off from Bellcore, the former research arm of the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs). Management is led by highly successful executives who have proven business experience in building technology start-ups into multi-million dollar success stories. A robust portfolio of intellectual property is providing the seeds for multiple new Tellium products and services. The company's seasoned technical team includes more than a dozen members of Bellcore's Optical Networking Research Group which has been at the heart of every significant optical network development project since the early 1980's. Programs like Optical Networks Technology Consortium (ONTC), LambdaNet and Multi-Wavelength Optical Networking (MONET) have defined much of what will be implemented in tomorrow's optical networks. Since we wrote most of the rules of the road for next generation optical networking we are way ahead of the pack in transforming our know-how into market leading products. In June 1998, Tellium moved into its current, 67,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Oceanport, New Jersey.

MONET Takes Shape with Tellium
Its first primary contract, worth $2.5 million, is with the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Tellium is installing a new, advanced high-capacity, high-performance optical network to transmit voice, video and data for U.S. government agencies throughout the Washington, D.C. area including the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and DARPA. Tellium is using its Aurora optical cross-connects, Marathon WDM transport and Marathon optical amplifiers to provide a secure optical network that provides provisioning, monitoring, protection switching and network interoperability at the wavelength level, eliminating expensive SONET layer equipment normally required. First deliveries to the MONET project started in October, 1998 and were completed in March 1999.
