<how important and/or relevant are SPEC scores in the real world?">

I would say they are very important. When large institutions are going to buy lots of machines the using have a formal evaluation process for selecting computers. Performance is a key part of the evaluation. Points are given for a number of factors. The one with the most points gets the sale.

Sometimes the performance difference are trivial but the winner gets most or all the performance points.

The spec scores fairly accurately reflect some use, but most major procurements have their own very specific test. High scores on the spec a good indication for the customized benchmark.
