It's a bit of a stretch to say the founder of DELL is acting like an investor. Actually, since he originally created all of the DELL shares in existence, and sold a large chunk to the public when DELL began trading, he did not buy his shares as DELL investors had. Since he didn't 'buy', he didn't invest; hence, he's not an investor. He still owns many shares, which have appreciated enough to make him wealthy, but his wealth is shares, not dollars.

Since MD is in a position of owning many shares and few dollars, it makes sense to convert one into the other to achieve a balance. Since his need for dollars is probably small, he only sells a small fraction of his position. Since his shares appreciate strongly, to invest elsewhere, he must find investments which have the potential to out-perform DELL. Not easy.

MD is probably selling to raise cash, pay tax, reduce debt... As we all do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Cheers, PW.
