I just read Chuckwalla's description on RB of his experience with Little Caesars' custom pizza kit, a school fundraiser. Good for a chuckle. One of the most enduring fundraising projects at my high school was the annual Beta Club Chicken Salad Supper, an event dreaded by mothers with smart children for decades. Club membership was about 30; everybody was given 25 or 30 tickets to sell. Ticket sales were counted every few days; if your sales were lagging, you were berated in front of the group. Everybody kept a list of their customers; these lists were passed down from year to year. If memory serves, total ticket sales were 900-1000. Everybody was given 2 chickens purchased by the club to cook and cut up. Mothers met in the school cafeteria the morning of to mix the chicken salad. Some mothers were assigned to make 200 biscuits which were required to meet very exact specifications. My mother paid a lady to make hers for 6 years. Club members met in the school cafeteria after school to put the plates together assembly-line style. You should have been there the year we gave out of chicken salad. Those plates got an extra perfect biscuit. Then all the club members had to deliver the plates to their customers. Imagine a paper plate filled with several loose items covered by plastic wrap (you know how well that works) sitting on the seats, the dashboard, the floorboards of a skillful teen-age driver trying to find homes. It's a pure wonder the population wasn't wiped out due to food poisoning. Profit would run $1300-1400. The work involved was enough to turn the parents against academic achievement. The profit depended a great deal on donated labor and materials and on efficient execution. To give the club sponsor her due, no other teacher in the school ran a project of this size year after year. Suppose the Beta Club needed $1500 today, and decided to use the Music Card. At $5 per card, the club would have to sell 300 cards or 10 cards per member. Realistically, the club today would probably need $3,000 to accomplish the same goals. Oops, 20 cards per club member. But no mess, no food, no heavy parental involvement, no liability, just sales. After the first year, the club would certainly have made something off the residual revenue due to reloads. So which would you choose? Chicken salad supper or Music Card? Regards, Suzanne
