The short answer is: Merced - the biggest blunder - diversion in Intel's history. I sold my first batch of INTC in 1994 (I think) when P7 was scrapped for a joint venture with HP. My understanding is that the original P7 was much like K7 inspired by Alpha. Intel decided that P7 core was not aggressive enough. Well, it would have been shipping in volume for years now.
