But not many gamers will *want* to run games at 1600x1024 anyway -- at least not before a few generations of SGI Intel Visual Workstations ;).

Well, they might want 800x600 anti-aliased, but for the moment, the same restriction applies in the current families of graphics boards (you can use 320/540 hardware to do supersampled 2x2 anti-aliasing pretty decently using the texturing engine and some OpenGL extensions, but you still need four times the fill rate).
