Agreed, most companies that do buybacks that I'm aware of also sell Puts. Buying Calls with the premium, IMO, is a sign of exceptional confidence in the company's future.

I suspect that much of the Put buying is by institutions / funds that hold Dell and believe the premium a worthwhile investment to protect their unrealized capital gains. ... not by the broker / investment bankers for speculation purposes. I don't really know. Nor do I know if there's any way of finding out.

And yes, to seriously believe that this is a conspiracy borders on paranoia.

As mentioned, it was a passing thought on a slow weekend.
