GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says Worldwide Handheld Shipments to Surpass
5.7 Million Units in 1999; New Dataquest Report Forecasts the Future
of Mobile Computing - BUSINESS WIRE, 08:05 a.m. May 24, 1999 Eastern

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--As more
handheld computers begin to incorporate wireless data access, the market
is poised for continued growth.

Worldwide handheld computer shipments are forecast to exceed 5.7
million units in 1999, a 47 percent increase over 1998 shipments of 3.9
million units, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc.
(NYSE:IT). The market is projected to grow in excess of 30 percent
through 2003, when worldwide handheld shipments are expected to reach
21 million units.

The worldwide handheld market is positioned for strong revenue growth
as well. In 1998, the market reached $1.6 billion and is on track to reach
$2.3 billion in 1999. By 2003, sales of handheld computers will have
topped $7.2 billion.

"In 1998, the handheld computer market crossed the important
billion-dollar sales threshold and is well on the way to reaching critical
mass," said Scott Miller, principal analyst for Dataquest's Mobile
Computing Worldwide program.

Dataquest forecasts the installed base of handheld computers to grow from
8.2 million units in 1998 to 32.5 million in 2003. "Enhanced
communication, including wireless access, enables a new class of
applications that is ultimately the key to growing the number of handheld
users," said Miller.

Dataquest expects that handheld computers based on 3Com's PalmOS and
Microsoft's Windows CE will gain market share at the expense of
proprietary offerings. PalmOS and Microsoft's Windows CE accounted
for 67 percent of handheld shipments in 1998. In 2003, the two platforms
are forecast to account for 92 percent of the market.

"The traditional strength of proprietary handheld computer products has
been tight integration between hardware and software in a fixed application
environment. However, pervasive electronic mail usage and Internet
access are changing the rules. While the marriage of form with function
will remain critical in handheld computers, failure to deliver seamless
connectivity and access to third-party applications is a showstopper,"
Miller said.
