I'm still looking into the losing money aspect. I did find this at this link, "Sam Walton duplicated his initial success again and again, financing his expansion with a significant amount of debt. He decided to go public in 1969 in order to finance a faster and larger expansion. Retailing has not been the same since."

Yes, it would be interesting. I recall that late 70's early 80's were a time of high interest.
