Organized campaigns,.... were unknown. The resources didn't exist, and a tribe that removed that much manpower from the hard economics of subsistence living simply wouldn't survive

Bingo.

Most of these tribes are hunter/gatherers. Thus, they have not specialized their economies to the extent that we have. Armies on the march do not grow food, hunt game, or father children.

With specialization of labor came the ability to go beyond limited inter-tribal warfare and play a far larger and dealier game. Societies found themselves with "surplus" manpower and increasing demands for limited resources. Combine the two and you have an equation for wars of conquest.

But once Indian tribes obtained the technological advantage over their rivals from the "white man", it was used to dominate their neighboring tribes completely. So we can blame it on the whites or their technology, but let's not try to claim that native american indian tribes did not have the will or desire to conquer. They just didn't have the resources that would provide them an overwhelming advantage ensuring victory.

I did a little bit of study when I was younger and a fledgling Paleontologist/archeologist/anthropologist. I had an interest in all of these areas as so many youngsters do, but I couldn't seem to stop picking up National Geographics or reading historical pieces on the topics. I still can't... :0)

But your points are well made. Technology has provided man the means to make total war on one another in a way that never existed in his history. And it ain't gonna get any better unless we all decide to live together and exert our energies on improving the lot of mankind instead of making it worse.

Great points!!

Ron
