Stock price sags as Corel denies earnings slide
Corel Corp. stock hit its lowest price in almost two months yesterday following a published report that the software company is trying to lower analysts' expectations for sales of new product lines...

...Corel has a special trouble managing these relations because many analysts are skeptical of company pronouncements and relatively few are still calculating sales and profit estimates. The result is one or two estimates can swing the consensus quickly...

Leo, Patience isn't always a "virtue," but I'm glad I didn't "dump" my shares afterall. Corel has a real contender in Office 2000. Although MS Office has an advantage with integration and some features, that gap has been dramatically reduced. I've been using MS Office 97 exclusively for the past few months to get a feel for the "nuances" that may be better or worse. To me, WordPerfect gets the clear preference. Although I have enjoyed Excel slightly over QPro, there is almost no difference. The new Corel Office 2000 is a fine product.

I can't imagine Corel not being able to sell a million copies a quarter. If they do not, it will be because of an inability to market effectively. (Sound familiar?) With the Suites now more similar than ever, it is a "psychological" war that Corel must fight in order to secure sales.

As far as Draw and PhotoPaint go, as fine as products as these are, I'm concerned about the competition, particularly Adobe's lineup. It seems Corel needs to figure out an effective strategy to move these products. But the real potential for profits is in the Suite. Corel has FOCUSED well on its production, I hope they FOCUS on it in marketing.

Up, Up, and Away,

Scott

Leo, Have you tested WP Office 2000? The file compatibility is most impressive. I've opened several .xls documents, and the formatting was identical, although in one instance the shading was a little off. In the installation routine, Corel has defaulted to the "My Documents" folder so that you can work with all documents in Microsoft's famous directory from the get go.

Actually, this move is positively better than it may sound at first hearing, because now it no longer matters which Suite you have used in the past, WP Office 2000 works seemlessly with all of them. If Corel does any marketing at all to IT Managers, the "compatibility" objection is no longer there.

If Corel becomes able to promote WP 2000 to the masses, the same argument can be made. Its like if you travel Interstate 5, you'll get there no matter which car you choose to drive. This is a strong arugment.

I hope it's Up, Up, & Away??

Scott
