It's extraordinary that Solomon Smith Barney has acknowledged a 10,000 ton gold loan overhang. How many mainstream services have stated that?

"...increasing evidence that total...gold loans...may exceed 10,000 mt"

An amount that can never be covered. Period. This and a few other pieces of the puzzle make the UK's motivation to sell--the part it hasn't (has?) lent out--crystal clear.

Amazed that would come from Smith Barney.

Thanks.

Invest Wisely for the Next Millennium
by Craig Smith

The headlines of the newspaper seem surreal: Doctor Kevorkian guilty
of 2nd degree murder. World faces massive economic slowdown. Fifteen
dead in Columbine High School Massacre. Airstrikes continue in
Yugoslavia. Trade deficit at record level. And the one that everyone
is cheering, DOW CLOSES OVER 11,000 FOR FIRST TIME. Someone throw me
a lifejacket, I think I'm drowning.

In this crazy world, one might even speculate that if the third
World War began as a result of the conflict in Yugoslavia, the Dow
might climb to 20,000.

Can anything stop the Dow? Is the economy really that good in the
U.S. to justify the market's climb to its present heights? Even
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and the best minds on Wall
Street are now scared.

Y2KNET Update

A Tale of Two Governments
by Mark R. Hettler

When Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge became aware of the seriousness
of the Y2K problem, he named Matt Carey his "Y2K czar," and told him
in so many words, "We have the potential for a technological and
operational disaster. Do whatever it takes, and use whatever
resources you need to avert it."
