Comings and goings

High-tech delivers, high-tech takes away. Westborough-based Data General
Corp., seeking a bigger slice of the computer storage market, has vowed to
spend about $100 million to add more than 450 people, including 100 in
Massachusetts. In boosting sales and tech services for its disk storage
division, Data General hopes to build a heftier arsenal to take on archrival
EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, the leading supplier of disk storage systems. But
as Data bulks up, Compaq Computer is slimming down. The Texas buyer of
Digital Equipment is closing its manufacturing plant in Salem, N.H., tossing
most of its 900 employees out of work. The plant, which had been used by
Digital for its powerful Alpha chip, was not expected to be targeted as part
of the massive layoffs resulting from the two firms' consolidation. But a cost
review determined it would be cheaper to shift the production to Texas and
California. The manufacturing plant was Compaq's last in New England.

SJS,

yes, the spreads sure can be huge at times. i guess i'd have to wait until EMC has a huge UP day before selling any CC. i appreciate the info on the CBOE website. i'll have to check that out sometime this week and start learning the ropes.

i greatly appreciate your comments and help, not to mention patience.

this will be an interesting week with EMC splitting after friday's close.
