MaoII: AV really needs some juice and imagination. I use it often but what a dreary site.

That is a common complaint. I think AV was designed as a serious search engine at a time when users were thought to be from academia, commerce or business. Yahoo and AOL are pitched to the mass market and have more of a tabloid atmosphere.

I prefer the AV layout and don't find it dreary - I find it calm , clear and uncluttered - but I think you will see big differences in its lay-out and offerings as soon as it completes the infrastructural work that has been going on behind the scenes. The addition of an ISP will mean that users will stay in AV or AV related sites for longer than they do now - its so-called "stickiness" factor will move towards the norm of a Yahoo or AOL.

I think a NETP-type product will become an essential feature of AV and all the major portals. I would worry for NETP if the portals were to develop their own NETP-type software or to patronise some of NETP's competitors.
