Juster,

One thing before I answer your questions... There's quite a bunch of successful shorters on this board like Pluvia, Mr. Pink, rogermci, HRAKA,.... and so on so it would be helpful to look around and see what they are up to. Also, check out Anthony's thread Subject 23993 along with Mr. Pink's.

Now: "how long do you typically hold?" Hard to answer, but I try not to hold more than 3 days or so. When you hold a while, you always run into the chance of a new PR getting released resulting in daytrading longs jumping back in. Also, for most shorts that spike up due to a PR, the majority of the retracement back down seems to happen within 3 days... usually the first 2.

"At what point do you cut your losses if it doesn't work out" Personally, I think 15% is a good figure normally. But always short in increments! I shorted HAUP at the end of the day Friday, but I committed only 30% of what I'm willing to put in HAUP short. I'll probably short 30% more at the open Monday, and wait with the last 40% when HAUP looks like a dead duck. Also, regardless of where you shorted, if a stock goes against you while running over it's previous intraday high, that's a good sign to cover and wait.----Not Howie/genejockey
