LAB ANTHOLOGY: ON-LINE RESOURCES

This is a preliminary list, which I hope (and expect) that other threadsters will add to.

pw1.netcom.com
Garbl's Writing Resources Online

Best single compendium of links. From intro: "Welcome to my annotated directory of web sites focusing on English grammar, style, usage, plain language, words, reference sources, online writing experts, word play and books on writing. Though I can't endorse all the standards, guidelines and links presented on all these web sites, I hope you find the sites useful, interesting and even fun."

Here are some of the sites that I personally have found useful, interesting, and even -- especially -- fun.

wsu.edu
Brians' Common Errors in English.

Witty & civilized. Discussion of misuse of individual words, and nice little essays on common grammatical disputes (e.g., split infinitives).

andromeda.rutgers.edu
Jack Lynch's Guide to Grammar and Style

Also witty & civilized Pay special attention to Professor Lynch's book recommendations, in the “Additional Reading” section. As he warns: “There are countless writing guides, most of them awful.” He also maintains a very nice page on Literary Resources on the Net: andromeda.rutgers.edu

webster.commnet.edu
Charles Darling's Guide to Grammar and Writing

More like a “real” grammar text; tries to cover all the bases. But well-written, and has neat on-line quizzes, if you feel like testing yourself.

cis.ohio-state.edu
alt.usage.english FAQ

One word: Great. Unfortunately, it's been almost two years since it has been updated. And I can't figure out how to subscribe to the newsgroup itself, which may have expired. Suggestions, anyone?

<< This I-write-better-that-you-do nonsense gets tiresome. Would you care to select a dozen posts of yours, put them up against a dozen of mine, and allow a literate jury to vote on the question? >>

The same nonsense as Gibberish's. I even grant that yours is bigger and thicker! Happy?
How about just selecting a dozen post of yours, put them up for us to admire? Or do they have to be compared with garbage to smell good?

<< It's actually a quote, Kurt Vonnegut, Happy Birthday, Wanda June, slightly adapted. Quite a good play. >>

Damn, I thought you were original because you wrote "I will try to do better." I was fooled! Actually it was quite a good phrase ('ass chews gum') even after your adaptation. With phrase like that, the play must be super! What can I say? I ain't no theater critick like you. By the way, pay attention to the 'than'. It's easy to whack the 't' instead of the 'n'. You never know what the hyaenas on this thread can do to a typo like yours. I-write-better-that-you-do? Not so bad if they charge you with speeling error. On the other hand, a 'cardinal sin' indictment of conjunction confusion might just destroy your literary career. Good luck to you and I'm sorry that 'the commecial sex industry has been dead' in your area.
