Rick and all other Bay Area Bio threadsters: I have arranged for Steven Burrill of Burrill and Co. and Edward Hurwitz, AFFX CFO to speak tomorrow night (Tuesday) at the MITCNC Bioentrepreneurship Program. It only costs $5, and beers are a buck more each. The meeting is on Genentech's campus and all comers are welcome. The topic is on the Wall Street Perspective on Biotech. This is a great opportunity to hear some great speakers on our industry. This is our last formal meeting until fall, during the summer, we'll be meeting at the Burlingame Brewery on the third Tuesday monthly to network over beers. I'm cutting in the full details below:

BIOGRAPHY OF STEVEN BURRILL: Mr. Burrill is CEO of Burrill & Company, a private merchant bank, focused exclusively on life science companies. B&C's business revolves around three core activities: strategic partnering, spinouts, and venture capital investment. In each of these activities, Burrill & Company seeks to create value and to participate in this value creation through significant equity stakes in its portfolio companies. Burrill & Company is also the general partner in the Burrill Agbio Capital Fund, an $85 million venture capital fund, and the $50 million Burrill Animal Health Capital Fund.
Prior to founding Burrill & Company, he spent 28 years with Ernst & Young (through 1993), including the last 17 as partner of the firm, directing and coordinating the firm's services to clients in the biotechnology/life sciences and high technology industries worldwide.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Axis Genetics, DepoMed (Amex: DMI), Genitope Corporation, Cross Atlantic Partners, Paradigm Genetics, Promega Corporation, Third Wave Technologies, Inc., Transgene (Nasdaq: TRGNY), and UltraOrtho, Inc.
Mr. Burrill earned his BA in accounting and finance from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
BIOGRAPHY OF EDWARD HURWITZ: Prior to joining Affymetrix as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Hurwitz served as a Senior Biotechnology Analyst at Robertson Stephens & Co. from 1994-1997 and at Smith Barney Shearson from 1992-1994. Prior to that Mr. Hurwitz was an attorney with Cooley, Godward, Castro, Huddleson & Tatum from 1990-1992. Mr Hurwitz received his J.D./M.B.A. from U.C. Berkeley and holds an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in genetics/molecular biology.
