You know the answer as well as I do. First of all, it's not costing Intel as much as you think. Second, the price that Intel would have to pay had they felt comfortable to cede the retail market to AMD would be much worse. Third, earnings of $2.0 billion last quarter (which is up 57% from Q1 1998) doesn't sound like "billions of dollars in lost profits" to me. And fourth, AMD wants to use its gains in the retail market space as a beachhead in their effort to make headway into other market segments.

What, do you think Intel should make it a cakewalk for AMD?

As long as we are on the retail market issue, here is something I think is significant.

I thought the general consensus was that speed grades under 400 would be very favorable to Celeron + Whitney. How come HP, with pretty strong relationship with Intel, picked AMD? What is the latest on Whitney? Is Intel on track with Whitney?
