West Best Resources Ltd. files notices for three more wells (excerpt from Kerm Yerman's newsletter, May 23rd...) West Best Resources Ltd. has filed notices for three more wells as part of a focus on exploration projects targeting the southern San Joaquin Valley. West Best is a company formed last year to conduct oil and gas exploration and production in California. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Black Sea Energy Ltd. of Calgary, Canada. Directors of Black Sea Energy include ex-Oxy executives David Martin, Leon Daniel and John Carver. Martin, Daniel and Carver were responsible for finding and producing billions of barrels of oil internationally during their tenures at Oxy. Tom Perkins, who is an ex-Oxy geologist, manages the West Best subsidiary. While at Oxy, Perkins developed prospects which led to huge (multi-trillion cubic foot) gas discoveries in Indonesia. West Best farmed into the Lost Hills (Almond Crest) prospect from Digital Petrophysics Inc. Rick Berry and Debra Olson, who are also ex-Oxy employees, manage DPI, which has secured a leasehold position consisting of more than 3,000 contiguous acres in the northern part of the Lost Hills field. The Almond Crest prospect got under way on February 11 when West Best spudded its first well in the northwestern part of the Lost Hills field, 45 miles northwest of Bakersfield. The well is Almond Crest No. 54-20 on Sec. 20, 25S-20E, located from the center of the section 330 feet north and 330 feet east. West Best with Gary Drilling Co.'s Rig No. 6 took the Almond Crest No. 54-20 to total depth of 3,750 feet. On a test the well produced a small amount of 35-gravity oil. Plans call for further evaluation. West Best followed with a second well: Almond Crest No. 12-20 on Sec. 20, 25S-20E, located from the northwest corner of the section 975 feet south and 560 feet east, placing the drill site over one-half mile from the Almond Crest No. 54-20. West Best spudded the follow-up well on April 27 with Gary Drilling Co.'s Rig No. 6, taking the well to total depth of 4,436 feet before cementing 41Ú2 inch casing and releasing the rig on May 8. Further evaluation is planned. Notices have now been filed with the Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources for three more Almond Crest wells. The drill sites are for Almond Crest No. 23-20 on Sec. 20, 25S-20E, located from the northwest corner of the section 1,535 feet south and 900 feet east; Almond Crest No. 11-20 on Sec. 20, 25S-20E, located from the northwest corner of the section 500 feet south and 200 feet east; and Almond Crest No. 21A-20 on Sec. 20, 25S-20E, located from the northwest corner 200 feet south and 663 feet east. ------------------------------------------------------ This Black Sea play appears to be focusing on shallow oil plays, so doesn't really fall into our ELH style of exploration. Still, it adds to the excitement in the valley. Rick.
