Chin: My point is that there are an increasing number of
households making the internet part of their lives, and
whether they know it or not, they do not require pc's!
Even a $100 pc is not as inexpensive or as convenient as
a $79 internet receiver.

I believe the settop boxes have yet to take off because
Microsoft bought the main sales channel and has
deliberately suppressed it. You make my point: you live
in Silicon Valley and did not even know these boxes have
been on the market for years now! The public's ignorance
of this is the result of a concerted effort by Dell and
all the pc makers who have a vested interest in making
the public believe they must sit hunched over a desktop a
few inches from an expensive glowing monitor in order to
surf the web, send and recieve email, trade online, etc.
You can go down to your nearby video/audio store,
get a nice 21 inch tv monitor ( with an s-video jack in
the back preferably) along with a $79 internet receiver,
hook the receiver up to a phone or cable line on one end,
and the monitor on the other, and voila: Put your feet
up, sit eight or ten feet away in a comfy chair, and
write your SI messages using your wireless keyboard and
mouse.

Check it out, you will never go back to surfing the web
hunched over a pc after trying it this way! At least
that is what good ole AOL exec's are betting--get ready
for their sales campaign this summer. Meanwhile you can
check out webtv.com for more info. They only have a few
million subscribers.

As for wireless internet access: Go to Investrade.com and
you can get yourself a free "smart phone" that offers
the features of a palm pilot, as far as accessing the web
remotely from a handheld device, AND the smart phone
also, unlike the pricey palm pilots, allows you to make
phone calls and place online trades, monitor online
accounts, etc. all from the one device. The offer from
Investrade runs thru June 30 and is free only IF you open
a $10K account. Otherwise you have to pay for it...
