If Cube should get one more Cable win, the market will start recognizing the real potential. The market has been burnt and wants to make doubly sure that Cube can deliver. Looks like many of cable operators are interested and such an announcement should be coming forth in the near future!

DVD players show up
DTS and AC-3 technologies were the main attractions in the DVD player sector. Among the local manufacturers who displayed their models, compatibility with CD and VCD titles, as well as strong error correction capabilities, were additional offerings.

No less than 20 companies showcased their latest DVD players, priced between $220 and $300 FOB, depending on design and features. Most of these models feature parental lock, two-channel digital stereo, vocal cancellation by remote control and random access functions. Coaxial and fiber optic digital outputs were available in several units.

"The big number of DVD players on the show is a sign that the DVD player is beginning to share the VCD market," said a spokesman from the Star Group Co. "This may also be an indication that high-volume mass production is likely to begin by the second half of this year."

Star Group showcased five models of DVD players, one of which is a mini unit measuring 210x350x100mm. The FOB price is $250 per set.

HiSense Group showed three models, with features such as 3D audio, 700-line picture quality, PCM/AC-3 digital audio and picture zoom.

Shenzhen Huaqiang Holdings Ltd expressed satisfaction at being able to close contracts for DVD players with Europe, Hong Kong and Middle East importers. The company's DVD players have selectable screen display formats of 16:9 and 4:3, a Dolby Digital AC-3 encoder and an AC-3 audio amplifier.

Fujian Fortune Mechanical & Electrical Technology Co. introduced a DVD player with a built-in 24-bit D/A converter, 720x576-pixel resolution, and optical and coaxial Dolby digital outputs.

Wanlida Electronic Co. Ltd believes the interest in DVD players, as evidenced in the show, proves the product has a potential market. "We are not going to forego the opportunity to manufacture DVD players," said a spokesman from the firm. Current models from Wanlida feature surround sound and a horizontal resolution of over 500 lines.
