Chemdex filed its IPO on May 24. Morgan Stanley is the underwriter. Kleiner Perkins, CMGI, Galen Partners, Warburg Pincus and the Pritzker family are the venture capital investors. Pretty impressive. As "business to business" e-commerce is likely the next "hot" internet sector, this should be a much talked about deal.

VWR Scientific (VWRX) appears to be the big winner here. It owns 10% of Chemdex. More important, VWR will jointly market 250,000 VWR products with Chemdex. Any sale to VWR's top 40 customers goes straight to VWR. Chemdex is the mere conduit. In other words, VWR appears to have merged its business with Chemdex, at no cost to VWR. A rather forward thinking management, I suspect.

Question: If Chemdex can sell lab supplies on line to businesses, why not other health care products? Why not pharmeceuticals?
