Thing is that Barron's, WSJ etc. had little competition a few years ago, now they face potentially much more - not much to be gained when you're already king of the hill. Sites like TSC and CBS Marketwatch can eventually offer the same editorial talent at a much cheaper cost (ie little overhead). Plus with all money the market is throwing at the web right now, the onliners will have the $$$ muscle to attract pretty much whoever they want in the writing dept. You need only to look to TSC's recent IPO - I'm sure a lot of writers are looking at the amount of new staff millionaires created and saying to themselves "hey, why can't that be me!!". Barron's and the like will also have to look at offering up to the minute or hour coverage similar to what's available on TSC - that's what makes them appealing right now. There's hardly an edge to be gained by reading the same WSJ copy half a million others are also reading at the same time. The market will always demand services to supplement the big boys. Plus, if you llok at WSJ today vs. 5 years ago, much more of the news they have in print is nothing new to the market by the time the edition comes out - it was already reported online somewhere.
