I use the second approach for the same reasons given in your post:
1. There are too many parameters. The first approach is very time consuming.
2. Difficult to measure the effectiveness of the first approach.

I feed the trendy stocks to OT. Go with the market. Don't fight the trend. The market is always stronger than individuals.

For example, in last two years the market was focused on big cap tech stocks, I ran Nasdaq 100 stocks in OT. Recently mid cap stocks are strong, I ran SP 400 mid cap stocks in OT.
