Yeah, this is exactly like Webtv's setup. The webtv also allows you to have a tv window on the screen and/or switch back and forth to a tv program. You can also hook it up to a satellite dish and have it freeze any program you are watching in progress for later viewing, and it connects to your VCR so you can basically set your vcr online. I can also use my receiver for sending pictures and photos, and it is hooked up to an HP-697c printer. Not to mention online trading, general surfing the net, sending and receiving email including cutting and pasting, icq chat, using spreadsheets, writing and doing word processing, and playing games. The browser and modem are built right into the receiver that is only about three inches thick. I pay Microsoft about $20/month---they are the isp. The service is loaded with all the amenities you normally have to clutter up your hard drive with when you use a pc. Stuff like wave files and html attachments etc. I can go to CDnow and listen to the record samples and not have to bother with downloading anything to make my system compatible with theirs. I don't have much use for the pentium pro on my desk at home anymore since I put the internet receiver and 21 inch monitor in the living room, right next to the tv. In the future I suppose we will have a bank of screens: the various cam screens ( front door, school, who knows where) the internet screens, and satellite tv picture screen. The model of the pc and the desk is long passe' in my house. If you read last month's issue of the print magazine Online Investor, there was an article about teenage investors ahead of the crowd and they've already got it wired. Showed pictures of them kicked back on the couch doing their online trading with their webtv terminals. It's the only way to go! Plus if you do use your pc power for things like telechart 2000, you can keep your pc free from much of the internet carried virus contamination. The only reason more people don't have these units already is marketing. People have swallowed the hard sell that they MUST have personal computers to do all this online stuff. Not!
