Two years after being awarded the initial network supply contract for Taiwan's KG Telecom, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU ) has again been selected for a major expansion of KG Telecom's existing network. Under a contract valued at around US$150 million, Lucent Technologies will substantially increase KG Telecom's Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) subscriber capacity.
Under the agreement, Lucent Technologies will supply and install its latest-generation GSM network products consisting of mobile switching centers, base stations and controllers, and micro cells, the latest compact, light in weight, robust, easily installed and maintained base transceiver station.
The expanded networks will provide KG Telecom and its customers a platform where advanced features such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for wireless data capability and Third Generation wireless technology migration can be easily deployed.
As a total solutions network supplier, Lucent Technologies will also provide software-based network operation and management systems, and professional services to KG Telecom's network originally built by Lucent in April 1997.
"KG Telecom is committed to bringing its customers the best network with the best services, " said Leslie Koo, chairman of KG Telecom.
